Kits Browning - Vanishing Cornwall

The characters in the story need some work. As a fan a naval historical fiction set in the late 's and early 's, this book was much like others that I have read. In fact, most of the characters including Phillips seem like cardboard cutouts. Here we have a sea setting in the British Navy and Phillips is the captain. Then there is the ever f On the King's Sea Service is a reasonable good read. Then there is the ever faithful first officer.

You won't find a steward who complains like Killick does in O'Brien's books. Phillips is just there rising from a lieutenant to captain in a series lucky breaks. There is a romantic connection void of romance. The interactions in general are kind of mundane. Phillips just seems to know what to do like he was born to be a British Navy captain. In other naval books of this genre, there are a lot of details.

It maybe discussing the sails and rigging or navigation or long sea voyages or different characters of the crew on board. In this book, the details are glossed over. Not a lot of technical language on the workings of a sailing ship. The story focuses on mostly the sea action and Phillips' situation as captain. I guess I would characterize the story naval historical fiction "lite. I like it all. I do wish there was a just a bit more character development though.

I have read reviews where people couldn't handle all the technical descriptions of an 18th century sailing ship. I would recommend that they give these books a try. The author paints a rich tapestry of the times. I find the books enjoyable and easy to read. Oct 22, Chaplain Stanleigh Chapin rated it really liked it. A fine sailing ship adventure While in the service lived in the old Mystic Connecticut seaport and developed a life long fascination.

This has a accurate storyline and good characterization. Feb 10, Diane Puckhaber rated it liked it. The story-line is a bit farfetched. Such rapid advancement and success aren't very credible. The end was too abrupt. Nevertheless an enjoyable and diverting read. Oct 18, Jerry Mercer rated it really liked it.

The Civil War at Sea: The First Modern Naval War - February 20, 2014

Good Short Novella This is a well-written story that ends too abruptly. The characters are believable and the plot is in keeping with the time period. More action sequences would help, along with sailing details. Phillip's promotions seem rather quick compared to his time on the beach. Sep 24, Jeffrey Gray rated it liked it.
